Our Shepherd musician chosen by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s (DSO) Civic Youth Ensembles

Lutheran High Northwest student and Our Shepherd Lutheran School alumni, Joe Dopke, has played guitar for 6 years as well as the drums and piano.  He has been in the Concert Band at Northwest for the last 3 years and last summer played his way to his most difficult audition in his young life.  Joe was invited to audition for the Detroit Symphony’s Civic Youth Ensembles, which includes both Jazz and Orchestral. The Civic Jazz Ensembles, a national leader in jazz education, provide students with big band and improvisational training under the guidance of world-renowned jazz artists.   To be a part of the DSO’s Civic Youth Ensembles, Joe’s audition included playing excerpts from “Little Pixie”, playing major/minor/chromatic jazz scales, doing solo work and sight reading.  Joe was thrilled to be selected and enjoys the weekly classes at the DSO.

September 2011

I want to thank Miss Zessin, my third grade teacher in the 1983-84 school year, for her kind and gentle way of educating students. She accepted me into her classroom even though she already had a larger than normal class. She inspired us all, dealt with amazing challenges that year, and did it with a grace I’ve tried diligently to emulate over the years. I should have thanked her a long time ago.
