Dear Stephania,

Greetings to you in our caring Christ.

This week's rain sure has been conducive to desiring naps. I love a good nap. I used to joke that on my list of hobbies, naps are right up there, whether it be for 15 minutes or an hour. My dad was a daily napper and our three girls napped up until they went to first grade. They still love a good nap. I use to tell them that a nap helped them grow, gave them more energy, and made me a better mommy.

On one of our family vacations years ago, Jillian cried out that she needed a nap. It was a hot July day and we were at Fort Michilimackinac, Makinaw Island. She was three years old and had had enough. She burst out when our tour guide was speaking that she wanted a bed to nap and wanted it now. She needed reprieve.

It is not just children who need rest, we as adults do too. At times, we all fail to rest from our anxieties, fears, and our work. Our excuses are varied and complex, but Jesus' solution is simple, "Come to Me, I will give you rest."

Where do you go for reprieve, besides a nap? Perhaps, it is a walk or run, sitting by the water, or reading on the patio?

The above verse from Matthew occurs after Jesus heard that his dear friend John the Baptist had been beheaded. He privately withdrew to a solitary place. He needed some rest.

Jesus desires us to physically and emotionally rest, just as He did. He also offers spiritual rest for our souls in his very self. When Jesus offers rest, He offers Himself. Jesus carried the weight of our sin as He died on the cross. In Christ, God's justice was satisfied and God's grace was given. Jesus gives us contentment, comfort, and peace, through His cross. Jesus is our rest.

By His grace, Christ gives us new life. Jesus is our rest. He is our vitality.

May we model to our children and those around us, rest in Jesus, our peace.

Sharing His message with you,

Chapel
Mr. Gerds gave our chapel message this past Wednesday. He shared how there are 12 references of Jesus appearing to people after His  ressurection and that 600 people saw a risen Lord. Satan does not want us to see the empty tomb and tries to block us from following Christ, as our leader.

Jesus is alive and is Lord. God does not change. Christ has risen and we can joyfully serve the Lord in all our words, thoughts and actions.

Hymn of the month for April is: "He Is Arisen! Glorious Word" - LSB #488

Dear Stephania,

Living Our Alleluias

Greetings to you in our caring Christ.

Wow! Awesome! Cool! A lot can be said and expressed in just one word! Alleluia! So many feelings are wrapped up in this word. Bible dictionaries tell us that "Alleluia is an expression meaning 'Praise the Lord.'" It was most likely used as a shout or a prayer at a point of great rejoicing-at a time when a person wanted to say "wow!" "Awesome" to God in praise of His marvelous works.

We might think that alleluia is a word that belongs in church. But it can be woven into our lives each and every day. Our families can be alleluia families, weaving praise in and out of words, thoughts and actions. Living our alleluias becomes a part of who we are and whose we are. We are redeemed children-young and old-who have been bought with the precious blood of our Savior and share in the victory of His Resurrection. Wow!

When we act as children of God in a world that encourages us to live for ourselves, we witness our alleluias to others. When we teach young children according to God's Word, we teach them how to live their own alleluias. God's Spirit enables us to live lives to God's glory rather than to our own. We teach children that the risen Christ lives in us and that our lives are an expression of thanksgiving to God for His forgiveness, love, mercy and grace through His Son, Jesus. Alleluia living sees Christ at the center and recognized that our lives are expressions of Jesus within us.

May we look for alleluia moments each day and consider how we can be intentional with our time to nourish and nurture each other in love in your own "alleluia" family at home, school, church and community.

We are Easter people and alleluia is our song.

Sharing His message with you,

Janet McLoughlin

Dear Stephania,

Greetings to you in our caring Christ.

"Be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." 1 Timothy 4:12

All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my mother. (Abraham Lincoln)

A mother is like Moses. She does not enter the Promised Land. She prepares a world she will not see.

Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.

The story is told of four scholars who were arguing over the beauty and accuracy of various Bible translations. One scholar preferred the King James Version, the second, the American Standard Bible and the third the Moffatt version. The Fourth scholar offered that he preferred his mother's translation. Knowing that his mother was not a Bible translator, nor a scholar, the other three chuckled and said," No seriously..." The man stood his ground. "I stand by my claim," he said. "My mother translated each page of the Bible into life and it was the most convincing translation I have ever seen."

May we love and serve God by loving and serving those He has placed around us in our words and deeds. We may be the only Bible some people read.

May what we believe in our hearts show forth in our lives, through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Happy Mothers Day,

Janet McLoughlin

Chapel
Mr. John Wittrock was our chapel speaker this past Wednesday. He shared the Bible story of Jesus telling his disciples he was tired and for them to go together on the other side of the lake to rest for a while. While they were traveling to the other side a fierce storm occurred.

Jesus and the disciples heading into that storm was no accident. Jesus knew. He used the storm to teach a lesson of trust and to show His power. He has the power over everything. Jesus calms the storm.

The same goes for  us. We are to trust Jesus in the storms of our life. The big and little storms. He is in control and holds us in the palm of his hand.

Hymn of the month for May is: "Glory Be To God the Father" - LSB #433

This program is an opportunity to see and appreciate the varied talents God has given His children at Our Shepherd. Join us for this special event!

A dessert potluck will be served in the Narthex after the program. The PTL is sponsoring this event.

IMPORTANT MEMO

During the past few years, certain incidents-especially noise and aimless running and playing in the hallways-have interrupted other activities at the Church campus and have caused us to look carefully at the protocol and procedures we want to follow at Our Shepherd's Awards Convocation on May 23, 2013. We are honoring some outstanding people for their service and achievement during the 2012-2013 school year.

We ask that students dress in keeping with the purpose of the evening. We consider Awards Night to be a dress up event. Please wear collared shirts with dress pants, shorts, cargo pants, or skirts. We do not consider jeans as appropriate attire for this event. If you choose to wear spaghetti strap tops or dresses, please cover them (and your shoulders) with a sweater.

Safety is always a concern. With the amount of movement that takes place during the evening, do not wear flip flops. We want to avoid tripping, falling, and stubbing toes. Since 6th, 7th, and 8th graders receive most of the awards, we ask that they sit in the front three rows on the pulpit side of the church. Please get your drink of water or take your bathroom break before the ceremony begins. We will not allow students to leave the sanctuary once the program starts unless they are experiencing an emergency.

Field Day
May 24, 2013-Come join us for a fun day of fellowship and exercise beginning at 8:30am. Mr. Gardner and the 8th grade class will be leading the school in various fun events. There will be stations. We will have a christian DJ this year and a smoothie station, to hydrate at. We would love parents to come and spend the morning with us and also help out.

We will dismiss at 11:30am with silent dismissal in honor of  Memorial Day. All students will dismiss out the circle doors.

PTL News

Time and Talent Update

Wow! It is May!  Many, many thanks for all the time so many of you have given in service here at the school or in other areas supporting our school.

If you have not done so throughout the school year, it is important to make sure that your family's Time and Talent card is up to date. Monday,  May 13th, the card box will be removed and a notebook will be there in its place to track any volunteering still going on.  If you have any updates, please write them down in the book in the library, or e-mail them to Kim Woodfin at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .   If you have any questions you may also submit them to Kim or refer to the Time and Talent tab under PTL on our school's website, which is www.ourshepherd.net.

Library Update!
It seems that many students may have received a notice about an overdue book or a fine that they may owe this week.  Due to some improvements we are making to our library system this information may have been incorrect.  If you would like to make sure that your account is up to date please go to library.oslsedu.org.  Students can then log in to their accounts using their usernames and passwords from Computer class.  This is the best way to make sure your account is current!  Should you have any other questions or concerns, please contact Miss Mazur at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. This year the event will be held at Our Shepherd SCHOOL on June 2 from 6-9pm. Thanks to a grant from Thrivent, we will have more inflatables, better food, and more bands! Featured bands will be The LivingStones, Scarlet White and Forever Redeemed. Best of all, it's entirely free! Bring a non-perishable food item to donate to our local food banks here and in Pontiac.
