Our Shepherd

Strives for Excellence

      Our Shepherd Lutheran School was established in 1956. This year we
      celebrate 56 years of quality education.

  Students from 25 communities attend Our Shepherd.  About 76% of the student body is Lutheran, 23% belong to non-Lutheran congregations.  Currently, there are 255 children in pre-kindergarten through grade eight.

 Our Shepherd is accredited through the following organizations;

The Michigan Association of Non-Public Schools, the Michigan District of Lutheran Schools, and the National Lutheran Schools Accreditation.

 Our Shepherd students place in the top five of all Lutheran schools in Michigan.

The ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) is taken annually by students in grades one through eight.  Schools as a whole are not given a percentile ranking.  Instead, testing results are not only calculated for subjects with a grade but also for the entire grade.  The three-year average composite percentile ranking for all grades combined at Our Shepherd has been at least 76%.  This means that Our Shepherd students have scored higher than 76% of all other students who have taken the test, nationally. Our Shepherd is ranked in the top five compared to other Lutheran Schools in the Michigan District.  In addition to the ITBS, students in grade eight take the “Explore” test, which is given through the ACT testing program.

 Eighty-three percent of the full time faculty has advanced degrees.

Professional growth is a requirement and is included in the annual budget.  Advanced degrees and training in education are highly encouraged.

Our Shepherd Lutheran School campus totals 8 acres and is nestled in a quiet neighborhood in Birmingham, Michigan.

Our Shepherd believes that small classes are more engaging places for students because they’re able to have a more personal connection with the teacher.  Small classroom sizes allows for personal attention, in-depth projects, field trips, leadership opportunities, and community service. Our average class size is 21 students.

Extra-curricular activities are available for grades kindergarten through 8th grade.

Our Shepherd offers band, strings and sports programs, as well as, Drama, Robotics and Chess clubs.

The Our Shepherd Hot Lunch program is outstanding.  Our Shepherd has done away with the heat and serve processed lunch found at most schools.  We have gone back to the basics; making homemade, wholesome meals with fresh ingredients.
