Dear Laurie,
Greetings to you in our caring Christ.
Dogs
But she answered Him,"Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." Mark 7:28
"Is he a thief?" That was the question 'Santa' asked me a few years ago. We were at the tree farm cutting down our Christmas trees. I was waiting there with our daughters and our yellow lab named Rex. Well, Santa happened to love labs, especially yellow ones.
I smiled and knew exactly what he was asking. I replied,"oh yes Santa, he has eaten a whole roast that was defrosting, a fillet of salmon and whole loaves of bread." Rex has been know to to eat a whole box of dog bones, a whole bag of marshmallows, and a whole loaf of bread within hours. Then, a few hours later he gets extremely sick in front of our guests who were sitting around our dinner table playing cards. This caused them all to exit the house, including my husband, because of the sound and smell Rex left behind. Real good Rex!
And so you discipline him and he gives that look with his big brown eyes of being ever so sorry, yet in a heartbeat, he would do it again. He is so focused, so intent on us or more like our food when we are eating. He stares, he follows, and he drools when there is food around. He is a beggar!
Rex reminds me of a recorded incident about Martin Luther's dog, Tolpel, who was begging. Tolpel looked for a morsel from his master, watching with focused eyes. Luther said, "Oh, if I could only pray the way this dog watches the meat! All his thoughts are concentrated on the piece of meat. Otherwise he has no thought, wishes or hope. (AE 54:37-38). Dogs can bark incessantly, steal, and make messes. Yet they can be loyal friends who patiently beg for crumbs.
The lady in the Bible verse above wanted a miracle for her demon-possessed daughter. She had heard of Jesus' miracles and begged Him for her miracle. Jesus was a Jew, she a Gentile, considered unclean, like dogs. Jesus tested her faith and she replies, "yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." Though she came begging as a dog, Jesus blessed her, for her tenacity and confidence in His grace. He blessed her as a child and heir of heaven.
We too are sinners, beggars of His grace. A dog's life is not far from ours. But by our Baptism we are counted, not as dogs, but as children of God and heirs of heaven. May we be found to be focused so intently on the cross of Christ and His grace and pray without ceasing.
Sharing His message with you,
Janet McLoughlin

MAY CHAPEL
*Our offerings for the month of May will be given to Continuing Christian Education Fund.
On Wednesday, May 9, Mr. John Wittrock spoke to the student body on Revelation 2:10. Using maps, an atlas, and his GPS, he reminded everyone that God has given us a GPS-His Word-long before technology came up with the idea. When we go off course, God's Word signals us of the dangers which lie ahead and steers us back to the right course to our final destination, our home in heaven with our Lord Jesus Christ.
May's hymn of the month- "Holy Spirit, Light Divine"
